I think the best way to improve is to find a speaking buddy preferably a native or someone who is fluent enough in Japanese and engage yourself in Japanese media. Addressing each of their learning needs would be time consuming and difficult and also the teacher would have to identify exactly what their specific weaknesses are and match them with a similar group of people who are all working on the same weakness.
So that is where I am at in my Japanese learning. Whenever I pick up a manga I need to look up every single word and after that I still don’t understand the sentence. Pick up an easy manga and get consuming. I, personally, am a native Spanish speaker, and my level of proficiency in English is similar to that of a native speaker.
If I was stuck in a class with people who had only been studying Japanese for 4 weeks, I think I would have to commit some sort of cide and I’m not really the chuukyui type, you know what I mean. But I think that is the problem with those Japanese schools. Japanese, on the other hand, has nothing in common with the languages you know.

You should consider doing Anki and Core 6k and maybe see if you can increase your speed a little bit. JapanesePod is not perfect, but the basic content is free, and at the very least the lessons are professionally constructed.

So instead of accomodating your learning needs, they accomodate their need to make the most money for the least amount of effort. The great thing about tools like Memrise and Anki is that they generally seem more like a game than like work cuuukyuu me. My advice to you is to reevaluate your methods, and set yourself goals. Admittedly, my speaking and listening are much higher than my kanji reading.
