At least it was when I was writing this intro the first time. I was only going to do a dozen or so releases, but the list ballooned well out of control. This week kicks off our second annual Holiday Gift Guide with a look at some high definition releases, because nothing says holidays like a format war. Preliminary numbers have the DVD selling 4. The Thanksgiving holiday delayed full numbers and this could change when final updates are in, although they won't change by enough to drop it out of first place.
And again, we had to split the list into two parts. There is also a number of high quality releases this week making the selection for DVD Pick of the Week tough to make. Even at that price, it is still the best on this week's list. While this week wasn't quite as busy as it has been for a few weeks, we still had plenty of contenders for DVD Pick of the Week. On the other hand, many muscials prove to be difficult to market internationally and it was never likely that this film would match its domestic run.
However, it has already made enough to be considered a financial success. Summers in Italy are for outdoor activities, so much so that many theaters close down for the season, which makes it a good plan to hold off opening blockbusters there till the fall.
This was enough for first place finish in its native market and a sixth place finish internationally. This is a record for a non- South Korean film and an unexpectedly strong performance. Additionally, the film has yet to open in a number of major markets including the U. The film opened in nearly 20 markets, and did extremely well in a number of them, but it was a holdover that led the way.
At World's End will earn there in total. These two totals are probably better indicators of the film's international drawing power, but it should still do very well overseas.
Shrek the Third
At World's End earned in its sixth week there. While these numbers are impressive, they are not up to the same level as Shrek 2 managed. Evan Makes Executives Uptighty June 25th, The box office was off last year's pace, again, this time it is mainly due to the box office struggles of the overall box office leader, Evan Almightywhich missed lowered expectations. It is not time to panic, yet, but if we don't see the box office rebound over the next few weeks, industry talk will switch from the big hits to the misses, and that tends to worsen a depressed market even more.
That last figure represents a record for animated films and is nearly triple what Shrek 2 opened with. On the other hand, poor critical reception and shorter legs suggest the franchise peaked with Shrek 2 and Shrek 4 and Shrek 5 might be pressing the studio's luck. However, in that market the film is fading fast and Japan could eventually become At World's End 's most lucrative market.
Ocean's Luck Runs Out June 12th, After three monster hits, it appears moviegoers might be undergoing some type of blockbuster fatigue. All three new releases wilted under the pressure at the weekend.
Worse yet, has fallen below 's record setting pace for the summer season and that year wasn't as front-loaded as this year. At this pace, the film should have no difficulty catching Spider-Man 3 and become the biggest international box office hit this year. It should manage to become the worldwide leader shortly afterward. However, that collapse was entirely predictable.
On the other hand, the film market fell below the same weekend last year, which is a lot more troublesome.
Granted, the drop-off is less than one percent, and year-to-date is still showing strong growth, but it is concerning nonetheless.
Newcomers Try to Knock Pirates out of Top Spot May 31st, The post holiday weekend sees three new releases, but for the first time in three weeks, there's no massive blockbuster on the horizon and there's little chance we will have a new number one at the box office. As impressive as that was, both Shrek the Third and Spider-Man 3 opened with better averages.
Yet, for many, it will be looked at as a disappointment. In fact, the whole month of May has been like that as, while it will go down as one of the most lucrative months of all time, it will still be remembered by some for not reaching expectations. While somewhat behind the early pace of Spider-Man 3the long weekend and official start of the Summer vacation season will help Pirates catch up in the coming days, and we look set for a box office battle royale.
It's strange, for four years after Spider-Man set the record, no film matched its record-setting debut. In fact, no film really came that close. However, in the past 12 months, three films have topped that mark and another film will do the same this weekend. Panicked, Artie tries to take control of the ship and ends up crashing it on an island where they meet Artie's retired wizard teacher, Mr.
Although they initially despise Charming, he persuades them to join him in a fight for their "happily ever after".
The villains feel their side of the story has never been told and now is the time to do it. Charming and the other villains invade Far Far Away and attack the palacedisrupting Fiona's celebrating of becoming a mother. They capture all of Shrek's fairy tale friends: They learn that she is in love with Charming, who plans to make her his queen once he claims the throne.
Captain Hook and some of his pirates track Shrek and company to Merlin's island, where they attempt to capture Shrek and kill the others. Shrek and Artie tag-team them effectively, however, and send the villains running, but not before Hook mentions Charming and the takeover of Far Far Away.
Concerned for his wife and his future children, Shrek urges Artie to return to the safety of Worcestershire; Artie, however, has other ideas. He cons Merlin into coming out of retirement long enough to use his magic and send them all back to Far Far Away; the spell works, but accidentally causes Puss and Donkey to switch bodies because they were touching each other.
They find that Charming is bent on revenge against Shrek for "stealing" his "happily ever after," and plans to kill Shrek in a play later that night. Charming's men arrive shortly, but another clever ruse by Artie tricks the knights into not taking them into custody.
They then break into the castle, where play rehearsal and set design are in full swing, and where Charming is bad at rehearsing and mock battles, "killing" two faux Shreks in a row. In Charming's dressing room, Shrek menaces Charming but Charming is able to summon his men, who burst in and take the four captive.
Charming prepares to kill Artie, believing he's the next king.

Charming believes Shrek and decides not to kill him. Artie, who had just been growing to trust Shrek, is crushed by this and runs away, not realizing that Shrek only said what he said as a ruse to save Artie's life. Donkey and Puss are thrown into the tower with Fiona and the other ladies, where Fiona is growing frustrated with the other princesses and their lack of initiative. Queen Lilian soon grows fed up, and successfully smashes the stone wall of the prison by head-butting the walls.
While the women launch a rescue mission for Shrek, who is being held captive elsewhere, Donkey and Puss work to free Gingy, Pinocchio, the wolf and pigs, Dragon, and the Dronkeys. As they prepare to enter the castle and join the ladies, they encounter Artie, and Puss and Donkey explain to him that Shrek lied so Charming wouldn't kill him. Artie seems hesitant to believe them. As the kingdom watches, Charming stages a theatrical performance in which he heroically rides to the rescue of Rapunzel in a fake tower and sings, somewhat badly.
To Charming's profound annoyance, the chained Shrek wins the audience's support by ridiculing his singing and acting. Just as Charming is about to kill Shrek, Fiona and her friends, along with Puss, Donkey and the Fairy Tale characters, leap onto the stage to confront the villains.
